Introduction

 Ichikawa City is situated in the western part of Chiba Prefecture, facing Tokyo, across the Edogawa River. Located approximately 20 kms. away from Tokyo Metropolitan area, the city has fully developed into a residential area and center for education. It is conveniently situated within the broad transportation network connecting every region of the prefecture with the Metropolis. Railway lines such as JR Sobu Line and Keiyo Line, and main highways such as the Keiyo Road and Route 14 provide easy access in the east to west direction.
 
 Topography is generally characterized to be sloping from north to south. The northern part consists of a plateau with an altitude of approximately 20 m, while most of the land area is level with an altitude of about 2 m. The north has a thriving pear-growing industry and abundant natural surroundings, where many educational facilities and residential areas are situated. In the south, a vast industrial section is being developed along the Tokyo Bay, which is expected to give rise to a new urban residential setting.
