What is the National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin)?
The National Pension Plan covers those aged 20–60 with an address in Japan. People who are insured under this plan pay an insurance premium. The national government, which also contributes to the plan, bears the responsibility for operating and administering the system. The
plan guarantees a regular pension. Upon incurring a disability or reaching retirement age, subscribers receive a pension.

What is the criteria of eligibility for joining the National Pension Plan?
Registered foreigners over the age of 20 and less than 60 years old are eligible to join this plan. You apply to join the National Pension Plan at the National Pension Section (Kokumin Nenkin-ka). People who are working for companies or corporations sometimes join an employees' pension insurance plan. Confirm your pension plan with your workplace.
How much is the insurance premium?
The actual amount varies from year to year. Please deposit the required sum stated in the payment slip sent to you by the due date. Payment can be done at banks or other financial institutions. Please consult the National Pension Section (Kokumin Nenkin-ka) if you have

What is withdrawal lump sum payment (Dattai Ichijikin)?
Foreign residents who have been insured under the scheme and paid insurance premiums for six months or more, and fulfill certain criteria, can claim withdrawal benefits within two years of returning to their home country and are entitled to receive a lump-sum payment.
