What is an AED (automated external defibrillator)?

An AED (automated external defibrillator) is an effective medical device that gives an electric shock to the heart to help restore normal heart rhythms in the case of ventricular fibrillation (a condition in which the cardiac muscle of the ventricles falters and fails to pump blood out to the entire body).
Any ordinary person can use it
It is important to administer emergency medical care for the several minutes before an ambulance arrives in order to save a person whose heart has stopped suddenly.
Any ordinary person without a medical qualification is able to use an AED.

When you find a person who seems to be in cardio-respiratory arrest
If the person is lying down and unconscious, it is important to take the following actions in cooperation with people in the vicinity.
- Call 119 and get an AED ready.
- Open the airway and check breathing.
- Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (artificial respiration and chest compressions), if necessary.
- Use the AED and give a defibrillation shock.
- Restart the administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (artificial respiration and chest compressions), if necessary.
Emergency care training, just in case
It is not so difficult to operate an AED. It is important, however, to take an emergency care training class in order to be able to operate it with confidence.
The Ichikawa City Fire Fighting Bureau regularly holds emergency care training classes and you are very much invited to attend.

AED locations in public facilities

In schools, etc. the AED is mainly located in the corridor in front of the teachers' room, school nurse's office or clerk's office. In other public facilities, the AED is located near the entrance or in the clerk's office to make it easy to take it out. Facilities with an AED have an AED sign to indicate the presence of an AED. Please check the location of the AED beforehand when you use any of the facilities.
Public facilities equipped with an AED
Ichikawa City has installed 195 AEDs in 191 facilities that are frequently visited by the general public.
AED models
Four different AED models are made available in public facilities in Ichikawa City (except in the Fire Fighting Bureau). Operation procedures differ slightly between models.
