Sumo
A national sport where 2 wrestlers called, "rikishi", enter the circular ring "dohyo", wearing only loincloths "mawashi", and attempt to throw one another out of the ring. In recent years, it has also become popular abroad as a martial art and competitive sport that originated in Japan.
Karate
Meaning, "the way of the empty hands", is a martial art and sport which originated in Okinawa, characterized by hitting the opponent using hands and feet.
Judo
Meaning, "the Gentle way", is the modern form of martial art and sport that has become popular abroad. Judo places more importance on developing mental discipline rather than claiming victory in a competition.
Kendo
Meaning, "the way of the sword", is the traditional martial art of sword- fighting or fencing using bamboo swords as weapons. Kendo can be a competitive sport or a training exercise to develop self-discipline.
Kyudo
Meaning, "the way of the bow", is the old traditional martial art of archery used to be practiced for war strategies or competition. Nowadays, Kyudo is being practiced as a sport or as a training exercise held in sports arena.
Aikido
Meaning, "the way of harmony of spirit", is the modern art of self-defense, based on Japanese traditional sports, Judo and fencing.
